WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?

A dental implant consists of two basic parts, a titanium screw that is placed into the jaw bone and a prosthetic tooth that is attached to the titanium post. A dental implant differs from other tooth replacement options because it replaces not only the lost tooth but also the root. And contrary to popular opinion, dental implants are not just for aesthetic purposes but are also essential to the overall function and health of your mouth, jawbone and other teeth.

DO I NEED A DENTAL IMPLANT?

If you have lost a tooth due to an accident, tooth decay, gum disease, poor oral hygiene, plaque and tartar buildup, or any other reason, a dental implant may be the best choice to replace your missing tooth, especially if you prefer not to get dentures, bridges or crowns. Replacing lost or decaying teeth with dental implants is an important step in your long-term oral health care as missing teeth will cause problems with your remaining healthy teeth (and possibly your overall health) if not replaced quickly.

WHAT IS DR. GRADY’S APPROACH TO IMPLANT DENTISTRY?

With extensive experience in both cosmetic and general dentistry with a goal of perfecting aesthetic appearances for his patients, Loudoun County dentists, Dr. Laura Duhring and Dr. Sean Grady works closely with each patient to design the perfect smile. When dental implants are needed, our experience and oversight is critical for obtaining optimal results. Each implant procedure begins with an evaluation of the case and with a visualization of the final outcome. Careful attention must be paid to ensure the shape and color of the tooth match the rest of the patient’s smile. The surgical portion of the procedure is performed as outpatient surgery by an oral surgeon. The surgeon will place the titanium post in the patient’s jawbone. This treatment stage can vary from one visit to several visits over the course of several months. Once the post is in place Dr. Duhring or Dr. Grady will mount the prosthetic tooth that was designed specifically for you.

Implants are durable and attractive and can last patients a lifetime. When a dental implant restoration is perfectly constructed, neither the patient or anyone else should have any hint that an implant is there.

IS THERE PAIN ASSOCIATED WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS?

Because implant dentistry is a sensitive procedure, Dr. Duhring and Dr. Grady utilize the latest in sedation dentistry to provide the highest level of comfort throughout the procedure.
